Opening a grocery (Kiryana) store is not a very complex process. First of all, a shop has to be procured. A shop refers to the premises in which the goods are sold. As an owner of the shop, you are compulsorily required to get your shop registered under the Shops and Establishment Act. The following rules are to be followed- “• Submit an application in the prescribed form to the Inspector of the area within 30 days of starting any work in your shop/establishment. The application is to be submitted along with the prescribed fees and should contain the following information: o Your name as the employer and the name of a manager, if any; o The postal address of your establishment; o The name of your establishment; o Such other particulars as may be prescribed. • Upon receiving the application for registration and the fees, the Inspector shall verify the accuracy and correctness of the application. Once suitably satisfied, he shall enter the details in the Register of Establishments and issue a registration certificate of your establishment to you. This certificate will be valid for 5 years and has to be renewed thereafter. • Remember, the registration certificate has to be prominently displayed at your establishment” The next license that you need to obtain is the license under Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954, The Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Business) Regulations, 2011 (hereinafter referred to as "License and Registration Regulations") govern the aspect of license and registration of a food business operator. Under Regulation 2.1 of the License and Registration Regulations, all food business operators in the country are required to be registered or licensed in accordance with the License and Registration Regulations, hence no person shall commence any food business unless a valid license is possessed by the food business operator, and the conditions with regard to safety, sanitary and hygienic requirements have to be complied with at all times.
